Kids Dentistry
Looking for a Pediatric Dentist in Olney?
Our family dentist loves kids! In fact, early checkups can help your child avoid unwanted dental problems later on.
Most professionals recommend that a child have his or her first checkup by age one. Dr. Kamangar enjoys working with young children (she’s a mother herself!) and has spent extensive amounts of time serving at-risk kids through the local health department.
Preventive Dentistry
Children’s teeth can decay far quicker than a permanent adult tooth. That’s why routine checkups are so important! In most cases, it’s best to schedule a preventive appointment every six months. That way problems can be caught when they are smaller and more comfortable to correct.
During your child’s checkup, we will let you know if any cavities are visible. X-rays may be necessary to diagnose areas that aren’t visible to the naked eye.
Dental Cleanings for Children
During your child’s checkup, we’ll perform a routine cleaning that includes:
Scaling away plaque and tartar buildup
Reviewing their brushing and flossing techniques
Discussing healthy nutritional habits
Protective Sealants for Kids
One of the best ways to help your child avoid cavities is to have their teeth sealed.
Sealants protect the deep grooves and pits of back teeth that are harder to keep clean. There’s no drilling or shots involved, and each sealant takes only a few minutes to “paint” in place. We typically recommend sealing the first and second molars…these are the teeth that erupt around the ages of 6 and 12.
Fluoride for Kids
This important mineral keeps teeth strong and resistant to decay. In fact, it can even help decalcifying enamel to remineralize before it turns into a cavity. The fluoride that we use in our office is stronger than what is found in toothpaste. As
such, it’s important to get it applied every six months!
Fillings for Kids
In children, it’s important to treat tooth decay early. Otherwise, it can spread into developing adult teeth or cause an abscess. In rare cases, untreated cavities can even lead to serious infection that result in hospitalization. We make every effort to help your child feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Laughing gas is just one example!
Gentle Tooth Extractions for Children
In most cases, it’s best to restore your child’s tooth rather than pull it. This prevents complications with their developing biting patterns that may require braces later on.
Unfortunately, sometimes extractions are necessary. If they are, we’ll discuss how we can help to preserve the space so that adult teeth erupt properly.
