Preventive Dentistry
A Beautiful Smile Starts With a Healthy Mouth
Regular preventive checkups every six months with our Olney dentist can help you take steps to avoid unwanted gum disease and tooth decay. Dr. Kamangar will give you the information you need to combat problems before they start and reverse them before it results in the loss of your smile!
Preventive Cleanings
Most healthy dental patients need to have their teeth cleaned every six months. This helps prevent tartar buildup, which leads to inflammation of the gums, triggering bone loss.
During your checkup and cleaning, we will:
Assess your oral hygiene
Recommend any changes in technique
Screen for signs of periodontal disease
Review nutritional habits
Perform an oral cancer exam
Screen for cavities by performing a thorough examination, along with any necessary x-rays
Deep Cleanings (Scaling and Root Planing)
If you have active gum (periodontal) disease, a preventive cleaning can’t help. Instead, you need a “deep cleaning” that will remove infectious bacteria and buildup under your gums, along the roots of your teeth.
Symptoms of periodontitis include bleeding gums, bad breath, deep pockets under your gum tissues, and visible buildup. Left untreated, it will lead to bone and tooth loss, which also directly impacts your overall health.
After a deep cleaning, schedule a checkup every 3 months to prevent relapse.
Splints for Bruxism, Clenching, and TMJ Pain
Excessive wear to your teeth (often caused by stress, clenching, and grinding) can wear your teeth down…not to mention break them. It can even contribute to jaw (TMJ) pain or failing restorations.
When we see that you’re prone to tooth wear or jaw pain, we can make a custom splint that is worn when you sleep or drive home from work. This takes some of the extra stress off of your teeth, preventing additional damage.
